The story behind the statue without his hand is also a rather interesting one which makes the visit all the more something you should take time to do --- story goes that people found St Francis body still intact and cut his right hand off to send to the Vatican to have it confirmed for his sainthood. Later on, when they erected his statue (fully with his right hand intact) there was a storm in Melaka and a tree fell slicing off the statues right arm as it was cut from his body.
